THE pizza arrived just as Blake finished pulling his sweats on. They answered the door and tipped the delivery boy generously. The kid had seemed sufficiently mortified to be delivering food to customers who were half-naked and chained together.

They carried the boxes over to the kitchen island and pulled them open. The smell of meat and cheese wafted towards Blake, making him salivate. He watched Nick transfer his first piece of pizza to the plate, the extra cheese stretching between the slices as he pulled them apart. Blake hadn’t realized how hungry he’d been and now, looking back and forth between his veggie with light cheese and Nick’s aortic-explosion-in-a-box, he craved the greasy, cheesy one.

He was better than that though; he had more discipline.

There were lots of things Blake wished he could have, but that didn’t mean indulging in those wants or fantasies was good for him.

He picked up two slices of his veggie delight and slapped them down on his plate, then waited for Nick to finish loading his plate up with three more slices before leading him over to the hand-me-down couch in the living room.

Blake flipped the TV on, picking a random sitcom to serve as background noise as they ate. It had been less than two hours that they’d spent alone and it was already awkward. Making small talk seemed pointless, because honestly he really didn’t want to know about Nick. He knew enough from the things other people had told him about the Riding the Board | Cate Ashwood

diver. Thus far, his reputation had held up to what Blake had experienced in person. He was a vapid, self-absorbed ass who needed to be taken down a peg.

He chewed his pizza, enjoying the slight crunch of the peppers, and tried to keep his eyes trained on the TV.

“Here,” Nick said, sliding one of his pieces across to Blake’s plate.

“No thanks,” Blake said.

“Just eat it. I know you want to. No one really chooses veggie pizza over meatlovers.”

Blake was sure that there were, in fact, many people who would choose veggie over meatlovers. He just didn’t happen to be one of them. His willpower slipped and he brought the greasy mess to his mouth, biting off the bottom corner of the slice. Flavor filled his mouth and he let out a tiny moan of satisfaction. Nick grinned, looking very smug.

“Good huh?” he said.

Blake nodded. “Thanks.” He supposed there was nothing wrong with a little indulgence every once in a while.
